Laura Mairs, MSc
Biomedical Sciences Research Institute, Ulster University
Laura’s career in science commenced with an integrated Masters in Biomedical Science with Ulster University and Indianapolis University Purdue University of Indiana (IUPUI) in the United States. She worked in Dr. Yang Sun’s lab at IUPUI for a year as a Research Scholar in ophthalmology and vision science with specific interests in phosphoinositides, their pathways and their association with primary cilia and ciliopathies such as Lowe Syndrome.
Laura was also involved in research that involved the clinical aspects of glaucoma and the medications used to treat this condition. Currently Laura is working towards a PhD in the vision science group at Ulster University alongside Dr Andrew Nesbit, Prof Tara Moore and their research team. Current research investigates the pathomechanisms of ocular disorders (including age-related cataracts, fungal eye infections, eye trauma and keratoconus) in order to identify new and more efficient treatments.
